           (i) Hand sewing machine: It is operated by hand. One hand is used to turn the hand
wheel. It is usually placed on a table or any other flat surface. It is portable, as it
can be easily transferred from one place to another. It occupies a small space and
can be used anywhere. A hand machine is easy to use but works slowly since
only one hand is free to guide the work. It is the least expensive machine when
compared to others. Refer to Figure 2.1.

(ii) The treadle sewing machine: This machine is operated by feet; both hands are free
to guide the work. It can be used for industrial and domestic purposes. It is more
expensive than the hand-sewing machine. The treadle machine works faster than
a hand machine. The treadle machine is fixed to a stand. It is advantageous to use
a treadle sewing machine where there is no electricity. However, it is not easy to
transfer the machine from one place to another and it occupies a large space. Refer
               to Figure 2.2.
