Preface

This text book, Textiles and Garment Construction for Secondary Schools is explicitly
written for Form One students in the United Republic of Tanzania. The book is prepared
in accordance with the 2023 Textiles and Garment Construction Syllabus for Ordinary
Secondary Education, Form I-IV, issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and
Technology.

The book consists of nine (9) chapters, namely, Introduction to Textiles and Garment
Construction, Sewing machine, Basic sewing stitches, Seams, Openings and fastenings,
Disposal of fullness, Edge finishing, Garment Pattern Making and Garment making.
In addition to the contents, each chapter contains activities, descriptions, illustrations,
pictures and exercises. You are encouraged to do all the activities, exercises, projects
and questions. You are also required to prepare a portfolio for keeping prototypes and
records of the entire lessons.This will enhance your understanding and development of
the intended competencies for this level.
