Textiles and Garment Construction

              Chapter One

Introduction to Textiles and Garment Construction

              Introduction

Textiles and Garment Construction is an applied science and creative art subject
which entails the use of fibres to produce fabrics for constructing garments. The
subject can also be regarded as an art craft that involves various techniques,
including designing and sewing. In this chapter, you will learn about the
concept of Textiles and Garment Construction, the relationship between Textiles
and Garment Construction and other subjects, the sewing room, and sewing
equipment. The competencies developed will enable you to use and care for
sewing equipment correctly, hence making various types of garments.

Concept of Textiles and Garments Constructions

Textiles and Garment Construction are essential components of fashion design, involving
the creation of fabric and turning them into wearable garments. The following are the
           meaning of both concepts:

Meaning of Textile and Garment Construction

Textiles are materials or fabrics made from fibres or filament that are natural, artificial or
regenerated. The textile fibers can be processed into fabric through various methods such
as weaving, knitting, crocheting and felting. Garment construction is the process of
using fabrics to create wearable clothes that involve designing, pattern-making, cutting,
sewing, fitting and finishing. Therefore, textiles provide the foundation materials, while
garment construction involves the process of creating those materials or fabrics into
clothing through technical and creative processes. Refer to Figure 1.1 representing the
summary of the meaning of textiles and garment construction.
