Introduction
Disposal of fullness is an essential process in garment making as it aids in
obtaining a good fit for a garment. In this chapter, you will learn about the concept
of disposal of fullness and methods for controlling fullness. The competencies
developed will enable you to apply various techniques to control fullness in
garment making.

Concept of disposal of fullness
Fullness is intentionally added to certain areas of a garment such as wirst, bust or hips,
to create volume or ease of movement. Inorder to manage this fullness, it must be
disposed of or controlled which is done using various sewing methods.
Meaning of disposal of fullness and their uses
Disposal of fullness is the term used in sewing to mean various techniques used to
reduce excess fabric, provide the desired shape and add design features or style to a
garment. Disposal of fullness, also known as controlling of fullness, helps to give a
good outline and adds an attractive look. It also provides reserved space for growth,
especially on children’s garments, and comfort to the wearer. The following methods
may introduce fullness:
(i) The use of bias, such as on flared and gored skirts, as shown in Figures 5.1 (a)
and 5.1(b) respectively.
(ii) Folding of fabric such as pleats, tucks and darts. Refer to Figure 5.1 (c)
(iii) Drawing up a fabric such as gathering, smocking, easing and casing. Refer to
Figure 5.1 (d).
