Choosing a method of controlling fullness
The correct choice of technique for controlling fullness can emphasize body contours
or give garments a more structured of flowing look. This will depends on the following
aspects:
The style of the garment: In terms of weight, texture and washability. For instance,
fullness in a straight skirt can be controlled using darts but not gathers.
The fabric: Gathers would be suitable for light to medium weight fabrics but not for
thick ones.
Use of the garment: For instance, the elastic threaded casing around the waist of
sportswear would serve better than the use of darts.
The wearer: For example, tucks are more suitable for children’s garments because
they provide room for altering the garment; vertical tucks can help widen the garment
when it is let out.
