the middle and the end. The language used should be simple and straightforward
based on the age of the audience for whom the performance is prepared. One of the
theatrical performance rules is that whatever is planned to be shown on the stage must
add meaning to the performance. The performance consists of many elements such as
actions, dramatizations, singing, speech, sound and visual elements. The combination
of these elements depends on the type of a theatre form to be performed.
Performer
This is a person who takes a role in a performance in the presence of the audience. The
role of the performer is to present messages that educate and entertain the audience
during the performance. Performers communicate to the audience through words and
actions such as gestures, dance and songs, mime, music and speech.
Performing space
A performing space is also called a performing area. It refers to a place where theatrical
performance takes place. A performing space is where the performers and audience
come together for the performance. Such a space is theatrically known as a stage. A
stage in this context includes any place prepared for a theatrical performance. It can
be a playground, a school ground, under a tree or a raised floor or a platform. Figures
1.1 and 1.2 show theatrical performances taking place at different performing spaces.
