emotions of the people through artistic expressions that include actions. In this
chapter, you will learn the concept, elements, forms, importance of studying
Theatre Arts and the relationship between Theatre Arts and other subjects.
The competencies developed will enable you to appreciate theatrical forms
and understand the role that theatre arts play in transforming communities.
You will also be able to perform various theatrical forms.

Concept of theatre arts
The word theatre comes from a Greek word “theatron” which means a place for
seeing. Theatre Arts is a subject and a discipline that involves the study and practice
of various aspects of theatrical production and appreciation. It involves the study
of performing arts such as dances, storytelling, theatrical rituals, recitations and
drama presented before an audience. Theatre arts can also be defined as performing
art which combines words, body, voice, movements and visual elements to express
meaning. It is a performing art that presents life experiences before a live audience
in a specific place and time.
Through theatre arts, various messages are delivered to reach a certain group of
people such as children, youth, elders, doctors, politicians, teachers, businessmen
and the like. They are transmitted from the performers to the audience. Theatre arts
are practised worldwide, but the way they are presented differs from one society to
another. Theatre arts differ from other public events. The main differences between
