Sport Studies for Secondary Schools

             Elements of Sport Studies

Sport Studies subject uses different elements which overlap in school programmes to
achieve the goal. The major vehicle of sport studies is physical activity.

             Physical activity
          FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
A physical activity is any bodily movement that requires energy expenditure. Any
motion you do throughout the day is considered physical activity. For example,
cooking, taking shower, walking, carrying chairs, and even speaking can be considered
as physical activities. A physical activity involves sport related and non-sport related
activities. In the sport related category physical activities includes sports, exercise,
             dance, games and play.

             Play
Plays are commonly played by children. A play can involve both physical and mental
engagement and is often characterised by spontaneity and creativity. Play activities
may or may not be planned and can take place anywhere (open spaces, sandpits or
recreation rooms) and starting any time. Sport Studies incorporate elements of play
to make the learning process more enjoyable and effective.

             Games

Games are structured activities that involve interaction and competition among
participants. They can be played for recreational purposes or as part of a competitive
sport. Games often involve setting objectives and rules confined to that particular
context that players must follow to achieve the goals of the game. Games can be used
in sport studies classes to foster skills learning, knowledge acquisition, character and
             behaviour development.

             Sports

Sports are organised activities that require physical exertion and skills in which an
individual or team compete against another. Sports are considered as highly organised,
formalised and competitive form of play. Sport usually have institutionalised rules and
regulations, and participants compete against one another or in teams to accomplish a
goal, such as winning a game or a match. Examples of sports are football, basketball,
swimming, netball, and athletics (track and field events).

             Exercise
Exercise is a planned, structured, and repetitive body movement. Exercise is used
to maintain and increase physical fitness, improve health and enhance sport skills.
