Visit some nearby agro-mechanical industry/shop (such as SIDO, VTC and other
agro-shops dealing with farm implements and machinery then:
1. Identify various implements and machinery designed for maize postharvest
processes; and
2. Outline the uses and suitability of each identified implement/machine.
Exercise 2.3
1. A farmer has just harvested maize and wants to store it for several months.
What key factors should be considered to prevent postharvest losses?
2. During storage of unshelled maize cobs, a farmer notices that some maize
cobs are getting mouldy. What could be the possible causes, and how can the
problem be solved?
3. Demonstrate the proper steps for drying harvested maize to the recommended
moisture content before storage. Explain the traditional and modern methods
of maize storage.
4. Two farmers use different maize storage methods; one stores maize in
well-ventilated cribs, while the other stores it in airtight bags. Outline the
advantages and disadvantages of each methods.
