Exercise 4.2
1. Outline the key characteristics of good-quality paddy seeds
2. Explain key activities involved in:
(a) Land preparation for planting paddy seedlings.
(b) Nursery management for healthy paddy seedlings.
3. Explain why water management is crucial during the early stages of paddy
production.
4. Describe one method used to control water levels in the nursery.
5. Describe the correct spacing and depth for transplanting paddy seedlings.
6. Explain how proper transplanting influences plant growth and yield.
Water and nutrient management
Unlike other cereal crops, paddy can grow in stagnant water, provided that the
whole plant is not totally submerged in water. Water management in a paddy field
involves irrigation, especially in schemes. Irrigation schemes are commonly used
in large-scale fields, while fields located near sources of water, such as rivers, are
typically irrigated through channels that draw water from these sources. A few
days after transplanting, flooding is conducted to help young seedlings establish
roots and ensure adequate moisture for growth. During flooding, water should
be enough to completely cover the field and not more than 1/3 of the seedlings’
height. This has the advantage of suppressing weeds. Water level monitoring is
of significant importance, especially during fertiliser application. At this time, the
water level in the field should be reduce or drained. This helps to avoid fertiliser
dilution or washing away. Similarly, three weeks before harvesting (when the
head begins to bend), water needs to be drained out of the field.
Paddy needs nutrients for its growth and development. To ensure optimal
fertilisation in paddy cultivation, it is advisable to know the status of the soil
