Cutworms: These are moth larvae that cut young bean plants at the base. They
feed at night and hide in the soil during the day. They cause a serious seedling loss
in the early growth stage. Weed-free fields reduce places for cutworms to hide
and feed. Pesticides can also be used for the control of pests. Consult extension
workers for recommendations on the type and uses. In small-scale production,
the application of wood ash around the plant base works as a natural repellent.
Figure 5.3 (d) shows a cutworm.

Whiteflies: (Figure 5.3 (c)). They cause plant weakening and spread viral
diseases. Crop rotation helps reduce whitefly populations in the field. Planting
marigold plants around common bean fields can help repel whiteflies. Spraying
of insecticide is recommended to control this pest. Seek advice from extension
workers on the type and dosage to apply for effective management.
