Agriculture for Secondary Schools
Exercise 5.7
1. Your school harvested beans but noticed some pods were still green. Explain
what might have gone wrong, and how this can be avoided in future?
2. A student suggests drying beans directly on the ground (bare soil) because it

is easier. What problems can this cause? Suggest better methods that can be
used to dry the harvested bean crop?
3. Mwanakwetu stored beans in a damp storage room. After one month, it was
observed that moulds and insects were damaging the stored beans. Propose the
steps Mwanakwetu should take to prevent this problem in the next cropping
season.
4. A nearby school wants to sell their beans but has no idea how to pack them.
Suggest some safe, affordable packaging materials they can use.
5. Mjasiliamali stores beans without cleaning or sorting them beforehand. Later,
when the farmer tries to sell them struggles to find buyers. What issues might
this practice have caused, and how can they be prevented?
6. One of your class members is taking beans to a local market, but the transport
cost is very high. What could be done to lower the costs while still getting the
beans to the market safely?
7. Some customers returned packages of beans bought from your school, saying
they had no label, and they were not sure about their contents. How can good
labelling solve such problems, and what information should be included on
a proper label?
Write a summary of what you have learnt from this chapter in your
portfolio.
