(b) Field peas (dry peas)
Field peas are grown mainly for their dry seeds. These are harvested when the
seeds are hard and fully mature. The peas store well and are often used in soups,
stews or ground into flour. Some common types of field peas include green,
white, yellow, and mottled or wrinkled varieties, which differ in taste, texture,

and appearance (Figure 6.2). Field peas are used in human food and livestock
feed or sold in local and regional markets. Field peas are mostly grown in colder
regions. They have a strong stem, and they grow like bushes and do not need
staking.

Importance of the common pea in Tanzania
The common pea is an important crop in Tanzania. It contributes to food security,
income generation, soil fertility, and job creation. As a protein-rich food, it helps
families stay healthy, while both green and dry peas provide a reliable food source.
Fresh peas are grown mostly for the local market, while dry peas are grown
mostly for export. However, with advanced storage and transport technologies,
both garden and field peas can be exported. Additionally, as a legume, common
pea can enrich the soil by adding nitrogen, thereby reducing the need for inorganic
fertilisers.
