Voice projection practices in acting
Voice is one of the most important tools in acting. Voice projection
is the practice of producing and controlling sound to ensure it can
be heard clearly by the audience, depending on the context. Using
voice effectively is very important for an actor because it helps the

audience to understand the performance. Voice practices can be
very fun and interesting. Voice practices in acting include breathing
practices and speaking at a distance.
Inhaling and exhaling practices
Inhaling and exhaling practices for an actor aim to help him or her
control his or her breath properly. This helps him or her produce a
powerful voice and enhance his or her acting on stage. There are
various practices such as deep and rapid breathing.
Activity 6
Practise breathing exercise following these steps:
(a) Stand up straight with your legs slightly apart;
(b) Place your hands on your stomach;
(c) Inhale through the nose while feeling the belly expand;
and
(d) Then, exhale slowly through the mouth, feeling the
stomach drop.
Repeat the steps five times.
Speaking at a distance practices
Speaking at a distance practice is very important in acting because
it helps the actor use his or her voice to convey the message to the
audience. These practices help the actor to change his or her voice
according to the size of the stage and the distance between him or
her and the audience. Figure 2 shows an actor practising speaking
at a distance.
