Example 3.17

In an experiment for determining the value of pi (π) the following values

were obtained:
3.142, 3.1578, 3.099867, 3.14103, and 3.15009. Calculate an average value
of pi correct to 3 significant figures.

Solution
Find the average of the given values as follows.

3.142 3.1578 3.099867 3.14103 3.15009+ + + +
The average value of pi (π )=
5
15.690787
=
5

= 3.1381574
≈ 3.14 correct to 3 significant figures

Therefore, the average value of pi (π ) is 3.14.
