Simplification of algebraic expressions
Simplification of algebraic expressions involves combining like terms by adding or
subtracting their coefficients in order to obtain a simple term. It may also involve
multiplying and dividing terms as well as working with fractions and brackets.

Addition and subtraction of algebraic expressions Tanzania Institute of Education
The basic principle of addition and subtraction of algebraic expressions is that,
only like terms can be added or subtracted.
Example 5.1
Simplify the expression 3n – 7n + 12n.
Solution
3n – 7n + 12n = 3n + 12n – 7n
= 15n – 7n
= 8n.
Therefore, 3n – 7n + 12n = 8n.
Example 5.2
Simplify the expression 6m – 4 – 2m + 15 and state the coefficient of m.
Solution
6m – 4 – 2m + 15 = 6m – 2m – 4 + 15
= 4m + 11.
Therefore, 6m – 4 – 2m + 15 = 4m + 11 and the coefficient of m is 4.
Example 5.3
If m = 2, n = 4, and p = –5, find the value of each of the following expressions:
(a) 3mn − 6mp + 2 n p

(b) m n − p n + 7nmp
