Glossary
Record of results a collection of related data or information which can be
used for future reference as evidence of past experiments
Siphon a bent tube or plastic pipe used for transferring liquid
from one container to another by using atmospheric
pressure to make it fl ow
Time a limited period during which an event occurred. It is
the order in which several events occurred or the rate at
which an event happens as measured by a clock
Triple beam balance used to measure the mass of objects in grammes. It has
three beams
Universe all matter and energy that exists in the vastness of space
Vernier calliper an instrument used to measure small lengths more
accurately than a ruler
Viscous force the pull that resists the fl ow of a liquid
Work work is said to be done when a force acts on a body and
the body moves in the direction of the force
Zero error a condition when a measuring instrument registers a
reading when the time value of a measured quantity is
zero. In the case of vernier callipers it occurs when a
zero on the main scale does not coincide with a zero on a
vernier scale
Motion continuous movement that involves a change in position
relative to a reference point
Speed the rate of change of distance
Uniform velocity occurs when a body’s rate of change of displacement is
constant
