                Introduction

Database systems are integral part of your daily living, impacting everyday
tasks such as banking, travel reservations, e-commerce, and supermarket
inventory control. They play a vital role in diverse fields like business,
government, healthcare, and education. In this chapter, you will learn about the
basic concepts of Databases and Database Management Systems; Database
models, design and querying; and Database Management Systems. You will
also learn about the emerging database models, technologies, and applications.
The competencies developed will enable you to create databases.

                                                      records management

The new form five students have just reported to a school for high school
admission. They are disturbed by the amount of paperwork the school uses to
manage the students’ academic records, including continuous assessments and
certificates. In a move to modernize information management, the school has
decided to implement a database system for managing academic records. Use
the following questions to explore what this transition means and its impact on
the new Form Five students and others at the school and beyond.

                              Questions:

                 1. What challenges might the new students face in managing their academic
                     records using traditional paper-based methods?
