Introduction
Theatre arts as field of study has undergone significant changes worldwide.
These changes have contributed to the emergence of various theatre
movements well-known across the world. In this chapter, you will learn the
six major theatre movements that influenced various theatre productions and
experiences across nations. These movements include naturalism, realism,
expressionism, symbolism, theatre of the absurd and theatre for social change.
The competencies developed will enable you to appreciate the dynamics in
the development of theatre through platforms of various movements and their
influences on Tanzania’s theatre arts practices and those of other nations.

Concept of theatre movement
Theatre movements are well known as theatrical movements emerged in different
periods of time which are well defined by the attributes and philosophy they
share. They are also referred to as distinctive periods of styles of the theatrical
performances and practices in history. They are characterised by specific social,
political and cultural influences. These movements emerged to respond to cultural,
social, political and technological change of a particular period that consequently
led to redefinition of the theatrical works. Each movement contributed to the
evolution of theatre, introducing new techniques and themes. There are many
movements, but only a few impacted the practice of theatre on other nations
apart from their place of origin. Movements such as impressionism, futurism,
