(d) Non-linear narrative: Expressionism plays are featured by non-linear
narratives, fragmented structures and peculiar sequences to reflect the
fragmented nature of human consciousness.
(e) Use of lighting and set design: Expressionist directors utilise dramatic
lighting effects and unconventional set designs to create a sense of
psychological unease and disorientation.
(f) Social and political critique: Many expressionist plays were vehicles
for social and political critique addressing issues such as alienation,
industrialisation, urbanisation and the dehumanising effects of modern
society.
(g) Emotional intensity: Expressionism theatre emphasises emotions and
intense psychological states, often portrayed through exaggerated
gestures, facial expressions and vocal delivery. Characters in expressionist
plays may often experience intense emotional swings ranging from joy to
misery.
Importance of expressionism
Expressionism movement focuses its importance on the impact of it in the
understanding of human psychology, society and culture. The following are the
key reasons why expressionism movement is significant:
(a) Exploration of subjectivity: Expressionism emphasises the exploration of
subjective experiences, emotions and inner worlds. By prioritising the
individual perspective, expressionism offers insights into the complexities
of human consciousness and the diversity of human emotions.
(b) Challenging traditional forms: Expressionism challenges traditional
artistic forms and conventions by embracing distortion, abstraction and
symbolism. This rebellion against established norms fosters creativity
and innovation. By so doing, it pushes theatre artists to experiment with
new techniques and styles.
