            Features of symbolism
                (a) Application of symbolic imagery and metaphor in performance:
Symbolism employs symbols, metaphors and allegories to convey
message to the intended audience. These symbols may be highly personal
to playwrights or directors, or they may have broader cultural or universal

significance. Symbolism intended to stir thoughts through symbols, not to
present it through real or natural action.

                (b) Focuses on establishing atmosphere and mood: Theatrical performances
that employ symbolism aim at establishing mood, atmosphere and
emotional tone over narrative clarity or logical coherence. The goal is
to evoke a sense of mystery, admiration or a sense of wholeness in the
                    audience.

                (c) Subjective nature of themes and experience: Symbolism plays often
explore inner worlds of characters and themes such as dreams, desires,
fears and spiritual desires. The focus is on the subjective experience
                    rather than objective reality.

                (d) Integration of multiple forms: In most cases, symbolism incorporates
elements from other art forms including poetry, music, dance and visual
art. These interdisciplinary approaches enhance the symbolic and aesthetic
                    dimensions of the performance.

                (e) Part representing the whole: In symbolism theatre, an ordinary thing can
have larger implication in conveying the meaning and message of the
play. For example, a flag which is simply a cloth with organised colours
can stand for Tanzania as a country.

            Importance of symbolism

The importance of symbolism in theatre lies in its ability to convey abstract,
complex and universal themes through suggestive imagery. Symbolism movement
is important in the following aspects.

                (a) Exploration of inner realities: Symbolism allows playwrights, performers
and other artists to explore inner emotions, dreams and spiritual aspects
of human existence. Symbolism enables artists to dig deeper on human
                    consciousness and experience.
