Word problems involving decimals
Decimal numbers are used in everyday activities in situation
where more precision is required.

Example 1

A farmer divided the farm into three areas and planted various
crops in each area. He planted 0.35 of the farm with sorghum,

0.25 with coffee and 0.20 with maize. Find the total area used
to plant those crops.

Solution

Area planted with sorghum = 0.35.

Area planted with coffee = 0.25.

Area planted with maize = 0.20.

Total area planted with crops = +0.35 +0.25 =0.20 0.80.
Therefore, the total area used to plant these crops is 0.80.

Example 2

The length of the rectangle is 102.75 centimetres and its width
is 82.8 centimetres. Find the difference between the length
and the width of the rectangle.

Solution
Length of the rectangle = 102.75 cm

Width of the rectangle = 82.8 cm

Difference between length and width:

102.75 cm – 82.8 cm 19.95 cm
=
Therefore, the difference between the length and the width of
the rectangle is 19.95 cm.
