Word problems involving measurements of time show how they
are used in real life.

Example 1
Nuru spends 1 hour and 20 minutes to wash dishes. She also
spends 1 hour 35 minutes to water the garden. What is the
total time spent by Nuru on these activities?
Solution
Time for washing dishes = 1 hour 20 minutes
Time for watering the garden = 1 hour 35 minutes
Add the time for the activities as follows:
hours minutes
1 20
+ 1 35
2 55
Therefore, Nuru spends 2 hours 55 minutes to do all activities.
Example 2
A timetable of a certain school starts at 8:45 in the morning and
ends at 4:40 in the evening. What is the daily duration of the
school timetable?
Solution
Convert the time into 24 hours format.
Starting time = 0845
Ending time =1640
Duration = Ending time – Starting time
Subtract the measurements as follows:
