Word problems involving measurements of length

Example 1

The length of a football ground is 100 metres. Convert this

length into centimetres.

Solution
Convert 100 m into centimetre as follows:

1 m = 100 cm
100 m = 100 cm × 100

= 10000 cm

Therefore, the length of the football ground is 10,000 cm.

Example 2

Kija walked a distance of 8 kilometres and 700 metres from
his home to the open market. Ashura walked a distance of
6,928 metres from school to her home.

(a) Who walked a longer distance?

(b) Find the difference in metres between the distances
walked by Kija and Ashura.

Solution

(a) Kija walked 8 km and 700 m. Convert 8 km and 700 m into

metres as follows.
1 km = 1000 m

8 km = 8 ×1000 m

= 8000 m
Add 8000 m and 700 m.

+ 8000 m = 700 m 8700 m.
