Conversion of measurements of mass
Large metric units of mass can be converted into small units.
Similarly, small metric units of mass can be converted into large
units. The conversion is done by considering the relationship

           between the metric units involved.

                  Example 1

              Convert 4 kg into grams.

              Solution

Use the relationship between kilogram and grams
             (a) 1 kg = 1000 g

                  4 kg = 4 × 1000 g
                          = 4000 g

                  Therefore, 4 kg = 4000 g.
             (b) Convert 7,000 g into kilograms.

                  1000 g = 1 kg
                   7 × = 1000 g 7 × 1 kg
                   7000 g = 7 kg
                  Therefore, 7,000 g = 7 kg

                  Example 2

Convert the following measurements into kilograms.

              (a) 2 tonnes (b) 6,000 g

              Solution
              (a) Use the relationship between tonnes and kilograms.

                   1 tonne =1000 kg
                   2 × = tonne 2 × 1000 kg

                                = 2 × 1000 kg
                  Therefore, 2 tonnes = 2000 kg.
