Measurements of volume
The basic metric unit of volume is the litre (L). Other commonly
used metric unit of volume is millilitre (mL). The following is the

              relationship between the two units.
          FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
              1 litre (L) = 1,000 millilitres (mL)

              Conversion of measurements of volume

The metric measurements of volume can be converted based on
the relationship between the given units.

                     Example 1

How many millilitres are in 9 litres?

                Solution

Use the relationship between millilitres and litres.
To convert litres to millilitres, multiply the number of litres by
                1000.

                        1 litre = 1000 mL

                             9 L = ×9 1000 mL
Therefore, there are 9000 millilitres in 9 litres.

                     Example 2

How many litres are in 18000 millilitres?

                Solution

To convert millilitres to litres, divide the number of millilitres
                 by 1000.
                1000 mL 1 litre
                             =
Multiply by 18 both sides to obtain
                18 × = 1000 mL 18 L

                18000 mL = 18 L
                                 =18 L
Therefore, there are 18 L in 18000 mL.
