Experiment 1: Investigating the importance of oxygen gas
in combustion.
Aim: To demonstrate the importance of oxygen gas in

combustion
Materials: Matchbox, two candles, a transparent container
with one open side or an air-tight jar, a watch and
a table
Procedure
1. Take the two candles and label them A and B.
2. Light both candles.
3. Cover candle B with an inverted air tight jar to seal out air.
4. Observe the results of both candles for one minute.
5. Write the results of your observation for each candle.
Question
Write the reasons for the results of the observation.
Results
Candle A continues to burn because there is enough oxygen
to support the combustion process. The burning of candle B
slows down and eventually goes out due to a lack of sufficient
oxygen to sustain combustion.
Conclusion
The experiment demonstrated that oxygen is essential for
combustion.
