Pulse crops belong to the Leguminoseae or Fabaceae family, which includes plants
that produce pods. These crops are mainly grown for their edible seeds, known
as pulses. Examples of pulse crops are common beans, pigeon peas, cowpeas,
common/garden peas, groundnuts (peanuts), bambara groundnuts, soya beans,
chickpeas, lima beans and green gram (refer to Figures 1.2 (a) to (j)). In Tanzania,
pulse crops are grown primarily for food security and income generation. They
also help to improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation when incorporated in
the cropping system. Dried pulses can be stored longer, making them an important
part of food security. Pulses are the main source of plant protein.
