(iii) Check for availability of related experience and expertise
Consult agricultural experts and extension officers, or experienced farmers to
gain useful knowledge on the production of the crop of choice. Their guidance
can help you avoid common mistakes and improve your farming practices.

              (iv) Land preparation
Plan when and how to prepare the land. This includes land clearing, ploughing,
harrowing, levelling, and applying fertilisers/ manure. Proper land preparation is
              essential for healthy crop growth.

              (v) Availability of quality seed
Select high-quality seeds from a reliable source to ensure good germination and
healthy crops. Select improved seed varieties that resist or tolerate pests, diseases
and harsh climatic conditions. Certified seeds from reliable sources can help to
improve yields. Also, ensure that they have good yield potential and meet quality
requirements for markets or food security.

              (vi) Water management
Different sources of water can be used to provide the required moisture for
optimal growth of the crop(s). These sources include rain, rivers, streams, or
dams. For rainfed agriculture, it is important to have proper information from
the Meteorological Agency about rain patterns, availability and intensity, as this
may help farmers to make choices of the suitable crop varieties to be grown.
Where irrigation is to be practised, it is important to ensure that the source of
water is reliable. The method to be used in irrigation should be efficient, as water
is a scarce resource. Moreover, consider water conservation techniques to avoid
wastage and ensure that water is used effectively for crop growth.

              (vii) Nutrient management
Cereal and pulse crops require different soil types for the best growth, so proper
soil assessment is important. Plan to test the soil (using a soil test kit) for its
fertility and pH level to ensure it is suitable for growing selected crop(s). Decide
on the right fertilisers and other soil amendments practices necessary to ensure
              healthy growth of the crop(s).

(viii) Weed, pest, and disease management
Identify common weeds, pests, and diseases that affect cereal and pulse crops
in your area. Develop a management plan using methods such as crop rotation,
integrated pest management (IPM), and appropriate weed control techniques.
