In selection of a suitable animal for meat production, one should consider the qualities
earlier described for a suitable animal for meat production. Other considerations are:
(a) Environment/climate of the area where the animal will be raised. Breeds to be
selected could either be imported or indigenous but one should select a breed
which is adapted to the existing environmental conditions of the area.
(b) Availability of feeds and water at the area.
(c) Capital to be invested on the enterprise.
(d) Availability of good breeds of the intended breed in the area. For example, if
planning to produce beef, Boran breed is suitable for beef production using
either natural mating or artificial insemination.
(e) Disease tolerance or resistance: The intended animal species and breed should
be tolerant to anticipated diseases, for example, trypanosomiasis.
