Describing improbable situations using Type III conditional sentences
(a) Sometimes, we talk about situations in which we do not have hope at all. We
express our regret for what did not happen. To familiarise yourself with such

situations, read the following sentences aloud and answer the questions that
follow.
(i) If it had rained early, I would have grown maize.
(ii) If I had studied hard, I would have passed my final examinations.
(iii) If I had trained harder, I would have excelled in sports.
(iv) I would have passed the annual examinations with flying colours, if I
had studied hard.
(v) If the school had been closer to home, I could have attended the night
preparation.
(vi) If it had rained early, I would have harvested tons of maize.
(vii) If I had been taller, I could have joined the school volleyball team.
(viii) If I had booked the tickets earlier, we wouldn’t have missed the journey.
(ix) If he had attended the hospital earlier, he wouldn’t have died.
(x) If I had eaten healthier, I wouldn’t have suffered from diabetes.
