Textiles and Garment Construction
For in-seam buttonhole, a gap is formed
in a seam to create the space through
which a button can be placed.
Position and size of the buttonhole: The
size of the buttonholes depends on the
shape and size of the buttons to be attached.
Buttonholes should be sewn far
enough from the edge of the garment
at about half of their diameter from
the edge of the garment, so that the Figure 4.8 (a): Vertical buttonholes
button does not extend beyond the
edge when the garment is buttoned.
The length of the buttonhole must be
equal to the width of the button plus
3mm to allow the buttonhole to slip
easily over the button. It should be noted
that, buttonholes are made on the right
front side of the female’s garments and
left front side of the male’s garments.
Direction of a buttonhole: A buttonhole
can be made vertically or horizontally
according to the direction of the strain of a Figure 4.8 (b): Horizontal buttonholes
garment. Vertical buttonholes are worked
on loose fitting garments such as shirts or
blouses as shown in figure 4.8 (a). They
are also best worked on garments with
a placket or banded opening. Horizontal
buttonholes are worked on tightly fitting
garments such as coat and tight dress
blouse as shown in figure 4.8 (b). They can
also be worked on wrist, cuffs and bands.
The use of horizontal buttonholes with
buttons will help the buttons not to jump
out from the edge of the placket/fabric Figure 4.9 (c): Horizontal strain of a
