(f) Extra income: Farmers can raise pigs for more money besides growing
crops. Raising pigs helps farmers to have a steady income, even if their
crops do not do well due to bad weather.
(g) Manure production: Pigs produce manure, a natural plant fertiliser.
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Farmers can use pig manure to produce biogas, improve their soil, grow
better crops, and spend less on industrial fertilisers, which are usually
expensive. Manure from pigs can also be used for rearing insect larvae,
which are used as chicken, fish and pig protein and energy (fat) sources.
An example of the insect larvae used in animal feed is the black soldier
fly larvae.
(h) Job creation: Pig farming provides jobs for many people, including
young graduates. because pigs can be raised in peri-urban areas.
(i) Getting value-added products: Pork can be turned into other products
like sausages, bacon, and ham. These products can be sold at high prices,
increasing the farmer’s profit.

goals, such as meat quality, growth rate, and adaptability to environmental
conditions. There are more than 600 pig breeds available globally. Common
pig breeds in Tanzania include Yorkshire (Large white), Duroc, Saddleback,
Landrace and indigenous pigs. There are also several hybrid breeds. Table 7.1
