would you opt for? Give reasons?
4. Explain the contribution back yard pig production to the household income
earnings.
Principles and practices of pig production
To raise any livestock profitably and sustainably, it is recommended that the
principles and practices of livestock production be adhered to. The principles
and practices of livestock production include proper housing, proper feeding,
disease and parasite control, proper selection and breeding, proper processing
and marketing of livestock products and by-products, and keeping pig farming
records.
Housing of pigs
The pig house should have enough space for each pig to move around (Table 7.2
presents the optimum floor space requirement per age group of pigs). It should
have good ventilation to allow fresh air and be kept clean to prevent diseases.
It should also protect pigs from bad weather like rain, extreme heat, and cold.
Several pig housing systems are designed to meet the needs of pigs at different
