Weed management
Banana fields should be maintained free of weeds by hoeing, mulching or using
herbicides. Bananas have shallow roots, so caution is necessary during weeding
to prevent root damage. A thick layer of mulch (10-15 cm) can effectively
suppress weeds, retain moisture and contribute humus to enhance soil structure.

Additionally, inter-cropping can help to keep the field free of weeds. Consult an
agricultural extension worker for the appropriate herbicides, the correct dose and
time and how to apply them to crop plants.
