            Sweet potato and its importance

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a root crop primarily cultivated for its starchy
tubers, though its leaves are also edible. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, and
beta-carotene. It can be orange, white, or purple (Figure 4.1(b). It is produced
throughout Tanzania for market in both rural and urban areas. The major producing
regions in Tanzania include Shinyanga, Mara, Mwanza, Kagera, Kigoma, Tabora,
Morogoro, and Mbeya. Both local and improved varieties are grown in Tanzania.
Improved varieties include Kabode, Kakamega, Mataya, Kiegea, Ejumla/Mlezi,
            Polista, and Ukerewe.
