Glossary
Dip needle is an instrument used to measure the angle of inclination
of a magnetic field.
Demagnetisation is the process of destroying the magnetic property or
magnetism of an object.
Electrostatic is the study of stationary electric charges.
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Electrophorus is a simple manual electric generator used to produce
electrostatic charges by electrostatic induction.
Electrostatic force is the push or pull of electric charges at rest.
Electric circuit a closed path for electric charge to flow through. It
consists of a voltage source, connecting wires and
devices such as resistors and switches.
Electrical conductor material that permits current to flow freely through it
under an applied voltage. Metals are good conductors.
Electric current is the rate of flow of electrons, or the sustained
movement of electrical charge.
Electrification is the process of introducing electric charges to a body
so that it is electrically charged.
Electromagnet is a type of magnet whose magnetic property is
produced by an electric current.
Focal plane is an area in a camera where light is focused.
Farad is the SI unit for capacitance.
Ferromagnetic magnetic materials that can be permanently magnetised.
Magnification is the apparent enlargement of an object by an optical
instrument.
Magnetic poles are the two ends of a magnet or magnetised body where
the lines of force are most concentrated. The strength
of a magnet is strongest at the poles.
Magnetic shielding process of limiting the passage of magnetic field lines
through a region by diverging them.
Magnetisation involves aligning the dipoles in a material to produce a
net effect of attraction or repulsion. It is the process of
making magnets.
Magnetism is a physical phenomenon arising from the force caused
by magnets.
