Control and prevention of malaria
Malaria can be controlled by destroying places where mosquitoes
breed. These places include bushes, long grass, and stagnant
water in puddles. Tyres, coconut shells and cans that hold water

can also serve as breeding areas for mosquitoes. Kerosene or
larvicide can be spread on puddles to kill mosquito larvae. Also,
coconut shells and other breeding areas should be destroyed.
Malaria can also be prevented by sleeping under a treated
mosquito net. Other ways include using mosquito sprays, coils
and repellents. Also, putting wire mesh on windows and doors
to prevent mosquitoes from entering the house. If someone has
malaria symptoms, they should go to the hospital for diagnosis
and treatment.
Exercise 2
1. List four symptoms of malaria.
2. Explain why it is important to sleep under a mosquito net.
3. Describe how a person can be infected with malaria.
4. How would you prevent yourself and your family from
malaria?
Cholera
Cholera is a disease caused by bacteria. It spreads when people
eat food or drink water that has cholera germs. Houseflies can
also spread cholera by carrying bacteria from faeces or vomit
to food or water, as shown in Figure 2.
