Preface

This textbook, Biology for Secondary Schools, is written specifically for Form
One students in the United Republic of Tanzania. The textbook is prepared in
accordance with the 2023 Biology Syllabus for Ordinary Secondary Education,
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Forms I-IV, issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. It is a
revised edition of Biology for Secondary Schools Student’s Book for Form One
that was published in 2021 in accordance with the 2005 syllabus issued by the
then Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT).

The textbook consists of six chapters, namely Introduction to Biology; Scientific
processes in Biology; Cell structure and organisation; Classification of living
things; Viruses and major groups of living things; and Nutrition in plants. In
addition to the contents, each chapter contains activities, illustrations, and
exercises. You are encouraged to do all the activities and attempt all the questions
in the exercises. You are also required to prepare a portfolio for keeping activities
performed in different lesson. This will enhance your understanding and
development of the intended competencies for this level.
