to accompany the song with a ngoma:

while accompanying it with a ngoma.

Sometimes, when playing ngoma, a drummer can use a hand and stick at the
same time. This technique makes the ngoma produce more than one tone. When
playing ngoma using a hand and stick, the player may choose to play the upper
part (head) of the ngoma with a hand and the side part with a stick. Figure 6.22
shows how to play the ngoma with a hand and stick.
