Dotted notes and tied notes
The value or duration of a note can be extended in different ways. There are two
main ways used to extend a note’s value or duration in written music. The first
one is addition or placement of a dot immediately after a note to create a dotted
note; and the second one is by tying one note to another to create tied notes.
Dotted notes
When a dot is placed immediately after a note, it increases the value or duration
of a particular note by half of the original value. For example, originally, a
semibreve has the value of four crotchet beats. If a semibreve is dotted, its value
will be extended by half of the original value. Therefore, a dotted semibreve will
have the value of six crotchet beats. The same principle is observed for other
dotted notes. The dot functions the same even for the note rests, by increasing
their value by half of the original value. Table 2.2 shows dotted notes, dotted rests
and their values.
