varieties include Fahari, Tumaini, Vuli 1, and Vuli 2. In terms of growth habit,
cowpea varieties can either be determinate or indeterminate. These varieties differ
in how long they take to mature and how much they yield. It is recommended
to consult reputable seed dealers and field experts for a reliable seed source that
suits better for your area.
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Cowpeas are sown by broadcasting or in rows at the start of the rains.
Recommended spacing is 45 - 60 cm between rows and 20 - 30 cm between
plants. Seeds are planted 3 - 5 cm deep. Sowing two seeds per hole is common,
followed by thinning. Good spacing allows enough sunlight, air, and nutrients
and also helps to discourage some pests and diseases.
Activity 7.4
Revisit a piece of land you have prepared (refer to Activity 7.3), and make sure it
is in good condition for sowing seeds. Then, carry out the following tasks:
1. Purchase a cowpea seed variety of your choice from a nearby reputable agro-
input shop that is recommended for your local area.
2. Divide the piece of land into two plots (A and B) of equal size, then:
(a) In plot A, sow the seeds using the broadcasting method; and
(b) In plot B, use the row planting method.
3. Manage the two plots equally and record differences in plant performance in
terms of germination rate, spacing, plant population, weed infestation, and
field manageability.
4. Record your observations and a lesson learnt from this activity in your
portfolio.
Exercise 7.3
1. A farmer chose a cowpea variety without checking whether it suited the local
climatic conditions and soil.
(a) What problems might arise if the variety is planted?
