              Cowpea pod borers: These are caterpillars that bore into flower buds and pods.
              Damaged pods show holes and may rot. Pod borers can be controlled by hand-
              picking  caterpillars,  using plant  extracts  such as neem,  or spraying approved
              insecticides when needed. Figure 7.4 shows cowpea pod borers and the damage
              they cause.

              Bruchids:  Bruchids  are  the  most  widespread  pulse  storage  insects  attacking
              stored cowpea grains. They lay eggs on dry seeds. The larvae feed inside the seed,
              causing holes. This reduces seed quality. Bruchids are managed by drying seeds
              well before storage and packing them in airtight containers or hermetic bags and
              applying the recommended insecticides. Figure 7.5 shows cowpea bruchids and
              the damage they cause.
