              In other regions such as Shinyanga, Singida, and parts of Tabora and Kilimanjaro,
              the crop is grown mainly for the dry seeds. The plants are left in the field until
              the pods are fully matured and dried. The seeds are then removed from the pod,
              cleaned and stored. Figure 7.2 shows dry cowpea pods and clean seeds.

              Cowpeas are also good for soil fertility management as they fix free atmospheric
              nitrogen into a form that can be used by plants. This improves soil fertility and
              makes the land more suitable for growing other crops in the following cropping
