to be dried by spreading out on a clean mat or plastic sheet under the sun. Once
dry, they are threshed to remove the seeds from the pods. After threshing, the
seeds are cleaned and winnowed to remove trash and broken parts. The dry seeds
should be kept in clean, dry bags and stored in a cool place, away from moisture
and pests. Placing the bags on wooden pallets helps to avoid dampness from the

ground. Natural protectants, for example, ash or neem leaves extract, or synthetic
recommended insecticides, can be added to reduce pest attack during storage.
Activity 6.10
Manage the harvested pea by doing the following:
1. For garden peas: cool, sort, grade, and pack the harvested pods using
appropriate materials.
2. For field peas: dry the pods properly, then thresh, clean, and store the seeds in
clean, airtight containers.
Marketing common peas
Garden peas can be sold in local markets, schools, restaurants, or food processors.
Field peas can also be sold in bulk to traders or cooperatives. Garden peas must
be sold quickly to avoid spoilage. Proper packaging and other aspects of value
addition should be considered.
Most pea farmers face various challenges, such as low prices, lack of appropriate
storage facilities, and pressure from middlemen. These problems can be solved
by encouraging farmers to organise themselves and sell in bulk. Farmers can
also look for new buyers or use mobile phones/internet-based platform to check
prices and connect with markets.
Activity 6.11
Carry out the following tasks:
1. Update and finalise the marketing plan made during the planning stage.
2. Prepare, display, and sell the peas while aiming to meet quality standards and
earn a fair price and profit.
