               Activity 6.9

              Under the guidance of your teacher, perform the following tasks:
              1.  Assess the pea crop in the school garden to identify maturity indicators;

              2.  Organise all tools and materials required for a smooth harvesting process;

              3.  Select and mark mature pea plants based on the learnt maturity indicators;
                  and

              4. Harvest garden or field peas using suitable methods, taking care not to damage
                  plants or pods.

              Postharvest management of common peas
              Proper postharvest handling helps to reduce losses and maintain the quality of
              the peas. It also prepares the produce for storage or selling. Garden peas should
              be harvested early in the morning to keep them fresh. After hand-picking, they
              should be sorted in a cool place to remove damaged or overgrown pods. The peas
              must be kept cool and packed in clean containers for immediate transportation to
              the market. If needed, garden peas can be blanched and frozen for longer storage.
              Field peas should be harvested early morning or late afternoon when the humidity
              is high, and the pods are tough to reduce shattering losses. Harvested peas need
