a supply of fresh beddings as often as possible. Cleanliness of eggs can also be
achieved by placing perches higher than the nest boxes. This is because chickens
like to roost in the highest part of the house that they can. Therefore, perches being
higher than nest boxes will discourage them from roosting in and soiling their boxes.

Grading of eggs
Grading is a practice adopted in places where eggs are sold by class. Eggs are
classified by weight (refer to Table 8.1) and in some markets the shell colour is
added to the value as well where brown eggs are preferred to white one.
Table 8.1: Egg classification by weight
Class Egg class Weight (gramme)

2 Large 63 - 73
3 Medium 53 - 63

Packaging for the market
There are many ways of packaging eggs for the market. In all forms of packaging,
the principal requirement is to ensure that the eggs remain wholesome throughout
transit to the market and when on the shelves in the market. It is recommended that
eggs are packed in special egg trays such as those shown in Figures 8.12 (a) to (d).
When eggs are packed for formal market, the package should indicate the following:
(a) Date of packing
(b) Size of eggs
(c) Number of eggs inside the carton
(d) Name of source (farm name and address)
