Activity 8.6
In groups, perform the following tasks:
1. Assume that you produce a relatively large number of eggs which you need to
store them for several days before reaching market. Through library search and
contact resource persons, find out reliable means for storing the eggs so that
they can reach market without losing their quality.
2. Summarise your findings as well as lessons learnt from this activity in your
portfolio and present them in class.
Handling of livestock by-products
Livestock by-products refer to any product derived from livestock after harvesting
the intended product such as meat, milk, wool or eggs. These by-products are
potential sources of valuable components such as proteins and nutrients. The by-
products that can be processed into valuable products from the livestock include
blood, hooves and horns, bones, brain tissues, feathers, hair and fat. Handling of
livestock by-products is of great economic importance as it generates income. Most
of these by-products may have value higher than the main products and help in
maximising incomes from the main operations. Efficient use of these animal by-
products has a great economic benefit in terms of increasing income of the farm.
