Exercise 9.1
Answer the following questions:
1. What are the major systems of rearing poultry?
2. Outline advantages and challenges of any major systems of rearing poultry.
3. Differentiate between natural and artificial incubation.
Rearing of pullets from 8 weeks to point of laying
After 8 weeks or a bit before, the brooder is removed from the house and birds
are reallocated in the pullet rearing house. The rearing house is well cleaned and
disinfected two weeks before the pullets are brought in. Important management
practices are:
(a) Change feed from chick starter to grower mash. Provide good and enough
feeders in the house and ensure adequate feeder space. There are several types
of feeders that can be used. A farmer can select one according to availability
and price. Figures 9.9 as well as 9.10 (a) and (b) show some types of feeders
that are available in Tanzania.
