Activity 9.4
Perform the following tasks:
1. Visit your school broiler farm or even a nearby farm and observe the birds and
equipment available in the house and identify the equipment and stocking rate
of the broilers by asking questions.
2. Find out the following from the farm supervisor/owner:
(a) The reason why the owner decided to keep broilers.
(b) The age of the chicks at arrival.
(c) Which vaccines were provided to the flock since day one.
(d) The age of the flock at the moment.
(e) The feed fed to the flock since day one.
(f) The amount of feeds per day per flock.
(g) From the previous flock, find out the final weight (slaughter weight)
reached.
(h) The place and price for selling the broilers/broiler’s meat.
(i) The challenges of the enterprise.
3. Record, prepare the data and present them in class.
4. In your school livestock unit and/or home, practise managerial operations in
broiler farming from rearing DOC to harvesting and marketing of broilers/
broiler’s meat while recording all your tasks in your portfolio. You may practise
managerial operations in rearing species of poultry other than chickens which
are suitable in your area.
5. Share the lessons you have learnt from this activity in class.

List the three feeds that should be provided to them.
6. Explain the importance of keeping broilers.
